01
What the Current System Already Gets Right
Before changing anything, it's worth naming what the PodPenny system does exceptionally well — because studio time needs to slot in without breaking these things.
Strength · Transparency
Every price is visible
The "no interaction required" promise is rare and powerful in this market — most studios (Bad Bet, The Rookery) require a strategy call just to get numbers. That's a real competitive edge and it needs to extend to studio rates too.
Studio pricing must be listed, not quoted.
Strength · Flexibility
Pp = modular by design
The credit system already handles "mix and match" beautifully. A client can spend 0.5 Pp on clips one month and 2 Pp on video editing the next — no friction, no plan changes.
Studio time should behave the same way: just another Pp-denominated item.
Strength · Anchoring
1 Pp = $100 is intuitive
The Pp-to-dollar conversion is simple enough that clients can do it in their head. Any studio session pricing needs to land on clean Pp values —
no 2.3 Pp sessions, no weird fractions. Whole or half steps only.
Strength · No Lock-In
Credits never expire
This removes the single biggest objection to pre-paying. It makes studio Pp purchases low-risk: buy a pack, use some for a session, spend the rest on editing later.
No pressure to use studio time you're not ready for.
02
The Core Math Problem — Fitting 90 Minutes into Pp
The market research puts your optimal mobile studio rate at $125–$150/hr for audio and $175–$225/hr for multi-camera video. The challenge is converting a 90-minute session into a clean Pp value. Here's what the math says:
Option A — Price by the Hour (Problem: awkward Pp math)
$125/hr × 1.5 hrs= $187.50 → 1.875 Pp ✗
$150/hr × 1.5 hrs= $225.00 → 2.25 Pp ✗
$167/hr × 1.5 hrs= $250.50 → 2.505 Pp ✗
VerdictHourly pricing breaks the Pp system's elegance
Option B — Flat Session Rate (Recommended: clean Pp anchor)
Audio-Only Session (90 min flat)2 Pp = $200
Effective hourly rate$133/hr — within $125–$150 market range ✓
Video Podcast Session (90 min flat)2.5 Pp = $250
Effective hourly rate$167/hr — within $150–$225 market range ✓
VerdictClean. Memorable. Competitive. ✓
Key insight: Framing it as a flat session rate (not hourly) also removes the psychological pressure of watching the clock — clients focus on the session, not the meter. It's how Provo Podcast Studio runs their $125/session model, and it reduces scope-creep anxiety on both sides.
Market position check: At 2 Pp ($200/session), your audio mobile rate sits above Despo ($45/hr), Ignite ($62.50/hr effective), and Rosewood ($65/hr), and squarely competitive with Noisebox ($100–150/hr) and Lemonade Stand ($85–150/hr). The 2.5 Pp video session ($250) undercuts Rookery ($300/hr) and Utah Podcast Studio non-member ($250/hr) while matching their member rate — delivered at the client's location.
03
Designing Studio + Post-Production as Complementary, Not Requisite
This is the central design challenge. The goal: combining studio time with editing/clips should feel obviously valuable, but each should stand alone without awkwardness. Here's the framework:
Path A · Studio Only
The Walk-In
Books 2 Pp (audio) or 2.5 Pp (video). Records their session.
Walks away with raw files. No editing required. Perfect for clients who have their own editor, or businesses recording internal content. Zero friction — pay in Pp or PAYG and book online.
Path B · Post-Production Only
The Remote Client
Records at home or another studio,
sends you files for editing/clips/distribution. This is your existing remote client base — Riverside, Riverside.fm verified work, out-of-state clients. Studio time is irrelevant to them. The system already handles this perfectly.
Path C · Studio + Post-Pro
The Full Pipeline Client
Books studio time AND adds editing/clips. This is the
highest-value customer profile — single vendor for the whole workflow. The combo pricing should make the math obviously compelling versus buying both separately.
Path D · Membership
The Recurring Creator
Monthly plan that
includes studio sessions alongside editing. The most predictable revenue. Ideal for weekly or bi-weekly shows — a creator who records every 2 weeks needs both studio time and consistent post-production at the same cadence.
The design principle: Studio sessions spend from the same Pp balance as editing. There is no separate "studio account" or different currency. A client who pre-bought a Creator Pack (12 Pp) can freely spend those credits on sessions, editing, clips, or distribution — in any combination, any order. The system is indifferent to
how they use their Pp.
04
Bundle Incentive Without Mandate — The Savings Architecture
The trick is making the combination feel like the smart choice — not through restriction, but through transparent savings. Show the math openly. Here's how the numbers work:
Equivalent to Rookery's $300/hr for just the session
💰 Save 1 Pp ($100) vs. buying separately
How to present this on the pricing page: Don't hide the math — show it. A simple line like "Studio Session (2 Pp) + Standard Edit (1.5 Pp) = normally 3.5 Pp. Bundle rate: 3 Pp." Transparent savings are more persuasive than mystery discounts. Clients trust the system more when they can see exactly what they're saving.
05
Walk-In Friction Audit — Making Studio Access Seamless
A walk-in client should be able to book, pay, and show up in under 5 minutes. Here's the current state vs. recommended state:
STEP 01
Discovers SWS
Finds pricing page. Sees studio rates listed clearly. Doesn't need to book a strategy call to get a number.
STEP 02
Picks session type
Audio (2 Pp / $200) or Video (2.5 Pp / $250). 90-min standard. No upsell pressure.
STEP 03
Pays with Pp or PAYG
Has existing Pp balance → deducted instantly. New client → buys PAYG Pp ($100 each) or Starter Pack (6 Pp / $500).
STEP 04
Books the slot
TidyCal or booking link. Picks date + time. Confirmation automated. Location details sent.
STEP 05
Receives files
Raw files delivered within 24 hrs. Optional: add editing at same time, or later from Pp balance.
Current friction point: The PAYG option (individual Pp at $100/ea) currently links to Square, which is good — but there's no clear "Studio Session → Book Now" path on the pricing page yet. A walk-in needs a direct route: see the rate, buy 2 Pp, book the session. That's a simple addition to the existing page flow.
The mobile context matters: Unlike a fixed studio where clients come to you, you're going to them. This means the walk-in "friction" is actually reversed —
you need their address, a confirmed booking time, and a 2-hr buffer around each session for travel + setup. A 2-hr booking window on TidyCal (even for a 90-min session) protects your time without charging for it.
06
Full Revised Rate Card — All Services with Studio Added
The existing credit pack structure doesn't need to change. Here's what each pack can now reach once studio sessions are in the mix:
PAYG · $100/Pp
1 Pp
$100 per credit
Walk-in gateway. Buy 2 Pp for a
single audio session, raw files. No commitment.
Starter Pack · 6 Pp
6 Pp
$500 · +1 Pp bonus
Studio path: 1 audio session (2 Pp) + 2 edited episodes (3–4 Pp)
Remote path: 3 audio-only eps OR 2 video eps
Session + edit: 2× "Session + Standard Edit" bundles (6 Pp)
Creator Pack · 12 Pp
12 Pp
$1,000 · +2 Pp bonus
Studio path: 2 video sessions + full bundles (9 Pp) + 3 extra Pp for clips
Power move: 4× audio sessions (8 Pp) + 4 edits (4 Pp) = a full month of weekly recording
Pro Pack · 24 Pp
24 Pp
$2,000 · +4 Pp bonus
Full pipeline: Launch pkg (10 Pp) + 4 video sessions (10 Pp) + 4 ep edits (4 Pp)
Heavy user: 8 audio sessions (16 Pp) + 8 edits (8 Pp) = 2 months of weekly shows
08
Monthly Plan — Adding a Studio Tier
The current monthly plans ($499 / $899 / $1,499) cover post-production only, which works for remote clients. Adding one studio-inclusive plan captures the "everything in one place" client who records with you monthly.
Plan
Current Structure
Proposed Update
Rationale
Consistent $499/mo
2 eps audio · 4 clips · notes · distrib
Keep as-is · remote-only clients
Solid value for remote podcasters. Don't dilute with studio add — keep clean.
Growing $899/mo
4 eps audio+video · 8 clips · strategy call
Keep as-is · add optional studio upgrade
Add note: "Add 2 mobile sessions/month for +$350 (save $50 vs. standard rate)."
Full Studio $1,499/mo
Everything in Growing + 2 launch assets + priority
Rename: "Full Production" · keep deliverables
"Full Studio" implies physical studio access. Rename avoids confusion with mobile sessions.
Studio Creator NEW
—
$799/mo · 2 sessions + 2 edited eps + 6 clips
Targets bi-weekly podcasters who record with you. 2 audio sessions (4 Pp) + 2 edits (3 Pp) + 6 clips (1.5 Pp) = 8.5 Pp value at $850 → saves ~$50/mo at $799.
Why $799 for the Studio Creator plan? It positions between the $499 remote plan and the $899 video plan — a logical ladder. The bi-weekly recording cadence (2 sessions/month) matches how most new podcast creators actually operate: they batch 2 episodes in a session, then spend 2 weeks on promotion. This plan serves that exact workflow.
